Unusual Homes

If your client is buying, or already owns, an unusual property, we will be pleased to talk to you about a mortgage for them. Lighthouse

We may be able to lend up to 75% of the value of the property.

The Society has lent on medieval houses, barns, timber properties, converted mills and lighthouses, cottages in need of refurbishment and properties that combine both a residential and retail/commercial use.

When assessing unusual properties some of the points we consider are:

  • The opinion of our valuer, e.g. is it a sensible or an eccentric project?
  • Are there sufficient funds in reserve to meet unforeseen problems, particularly if a significant conversion project is proposed?
  • Will the project hold appeal for potential buyers in the longer term?
  • Will the property be suitable as a main residence or limited to a holiday home?
  • Is the project in keeping with its environment?
  • Is the standard of construction good enough for the term of the mortgage and beyond?
  • Has/Will construction, renovation or conversion be supervised by a professional architect or building surveyor?
