Our environmental, social and governance objectives
Harpenden Building Society is committed to sustainable financial services, striving to manage the impact of climate change and support the transition to a greener, net-zero economy.
We continue to develop our knowledge of climate change, evolve our environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives and take actions that benefit the organisation, our members and the local community, while supporting the overall big-picture cause. This is achieved through working closely with our partners and stakeholders.
Here are the main points in our ESG manifesto:

- We support the UK Government’s ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, and are committed to helping generate sustainable economic growth.

Taking corporate social responsibility seriously
Being a local building society that’s big enough to compete and small enough to care enables us to make a real impact on our community. That’s why we take our corporate social responsibility (CSR) so seriously.
We’re proud of the CSR work we do in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, supporting numerous charities, social enterprises and valuable local causes [link to the Community News page].
Our CSR programme
The Harpenden Building Society CSR programme ensures we respond to community needs in ways that matter to people most and deliver meaningful impact. Our programme has two primary purposes:
Firstly, it enables us to demonstrate our core best practice behaviours, which are:

- Serving our customers with honesty and integrity
- Considering the contributions of our employees at all times and ensuring recognition of their part in our success
- Striving to optimise our members’ benefits
Secondly, our CSR programme drives our ongoing commitment to supporting and building confidence amongst our communities. This continues our legacy as a mutual building society [link to the Our Story page], established way back in 1953 to help local people buy their own homes.
We don’t just provide financial support, we’re entrenched in the local community, partnering with numerous local organisations and working on various socially responsible initiatives.

Ongoing commitments to the community
